7 Reasons Why Choose Unemployed Professors for Succeed this semester

New Year’s Resolutions: Succeed this semester: OK, so you’re not hung over anymore. So now it is time to start becoming the new person you wanted to be before you got wasted on New Year’s Eve. Thinner, richer, happier, more organized, more dedicated to your studies, and all that good stuff.

Read this blog post, then set aside an hour or so and do the following:

1. Read the syllabi and course policies for each course you are taking. These scintillating documents are important. They outline major assignments, due dates, contact information and so on. When I teach, I tell my students that the syllabus is essentially a “contract” for the class. You are responsible for reading and knowing it. Since most classes dive into content early on, familiarize yourself with the policies beforehand.
2. Input all important deadlines into your calendar (iCal, Google Calendar, or whatever) for 24 hours before they are due. That way, you will focus on getting them done early with a good cushion. Consider exams, announced quizzes, and reading assignments as assignments, too.
3. Input reading assignments as well! If you see a bottleneck or a week with a heavy reading load, get ahead on it ASAP.
4. If a physical textbook is required, order it early. If a digital book is required, download it and make sure it’s working, especially if it’s one of those annoying ones that requires a specific program to read it.
5. Create a file on your computer for each assignment you’ll have to hand in. Give the file a professional and intuitive name. Paste the instructions for each assignment, if available, into the file. That way, when you get started, you won’t have to dig through a bunch of files or papers looking for the instructions.
6. Look up the physical location of each of your classes. Make sure you know where the building is on the campus, and make sure you know your “commute” from one class to the next: This is especially important if you have two classes back to back! As a professor, it drives me crazy when students ask if they could leave class early because they had to walk across campus. If possible, try to schedule your courses so that you have a good cushion of time in between to get there.
7. Clear off your main workspace or make a workspace for yourself if you do not already have one. Keep this area clean, uncluttered, and well lit.

With these tips, you should be off to a great start. Stay organized, stay focused, and keep your eye on the prize! It can be stressful, especially when you have long days and tough work. It can be easy to lose sight of the fact that school is brief. Remember that even the longest semester is only a few months long. In only sixteen short weeks it will all be over!
